Giant Stuffed Monkey Toys & New World Monkey Facts
With a giant stuffed monkey, the possibilities for play are endless. Designed with long arms and tails, soft plush bodies, and velvety soled feet, a giant stuffed monkey is ready whenever you are to dive into an outrageous world of adventure.
In tropical Central and South America, the New World monkey species – Howlers – can be found. They get their name from the harsh, unpleasant sound they make. At dawn and dusk, when a group of howlers all vocalize at the same time, they can be heard up to three miles away. With their large throats and specialized vocal chambers, male monkeys are able to turn up the volume when making their signature call. It is meant as a warning message to other monkeys that the territory is already occupied.
Howler monkeys are the biggest of all nine species of New World monkeys. And, they have wide nostrils that open from the side and no padding on their rumps, which sets them apart from Old World monkeys. They are also blessed with a tail that can be used for grasping, holding and wrapping around objects. Howlers use their tails as an extra arm with which they can use to grasp or hang from the tree branches. Given Howlers rarely go to the ground, their tail comes in quite handy. Since leaves make up the majority of their diet, they prefer to remain above ground where they can dine to their hearts content.
Howler monkeys have distinctive beards and thick, long hair that can be black, brown, or red. They grow to about two feet in length (which does not include its 30-inch tail) and weighing up to 22 pounds. Unlike most other species of monkey, howlers do not travel often, preferring to remain in their small communities. They are typically inactive only covering about 1,300 feet in an entire day and sleep upwards of 15 hours. Next to sloths, howler monkeys are some of the slowest mammals in the rain forest.
